Term 2 Week 6-9 Homework- What's in a name?

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

William Shakespeare wrote this line in his (now very famous) play Romeo and Juliet. With this line, Juliet is wondering if your name is really that important. You couldn't be the person you are because of your name, right? Surely it has nothing really to do with what makes you, you.

But names are important. We humans all seem to have one, but often, we don't even choose them! So, what's the deal with names? Why do we have them? What do they mean?

Over the next few weeks, have a look into the following questions. Mums, dads, grandparents and other family member will be your best resources for this project- ask them as many questions as you can! Find a place to record your findings- you could set up a doc or presentation, create a booklet or poster, or find another beautiful way to present it (animation, video interview, blog etc). Remember, this project is about a part of you. Create it carefully and with pride. Take notes first, and then use them  to create a presentation to remember!

Who gave you your name?

How did they choose it?

What does your name mean? Does it mean something to/ or is it very special to your family for some reason?

Where does your name originate from (in relation to language)?

Do you have more than one name? Which of your names do you prefer to use, and why?

How has your name affected your life and personality?

What do names mean to your culture? Does your culture have any special naming customs (that's special activities/rituals/processes)?

Philosophical questions to boggle the brain! (extra for those who are interested)

Are humans the only creatures to create and use names?

Is it possible to be nameless?

Can you break a name?

If you change your name, will you still be you?

Happy researching!
